There are an awful lot of engineers in this world. Electrical, mechanical and software engineers are familiar, yet there are also acoustic, biomedical, manufacturing, aerospace, chemical, structural and marine engineers — to name but a few.
No matter the speciality, it seems, engineers are in serious demand. Companies are having to increase salaries and rethink their recruitment methods to get the people they need, and many are looking overseas in the hope of attracting expats home.
Frank Farrelly, chief operating officer of Sigmar Recruitment, says 2016 was the best year in almost a decade in terms of opportunities in engineering here. Companies are now scrambling to fill engineering roles at a rate they never anticipated.
