Contracts for $218M Dubai road project awarded

Two contracts for a project which will link Jumeirah district with Al Khail Road and the Parallel Roads in Dubai at a cost of AED800M ($218M) have been awarded.

This comes after vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum endorsed the project.

The first contract, which was awarded to China State Company, includes the construction of two-level roads and bridges that will connect Jumeirah with Al Khail Road, First Al Khail Road and Al Asayel Road for easier flow of traffic.

The scope of the work involves the construction of a flyover at the intersection of Latifa Bint Hamdan Street and the First Al-Khail Street, and a signalised surface junction under the bridge.

The contract also comprises improvements to the intersection of Umm Al-Sheef Street and Al-Wasl Street and main surface roads, service roads, and landscaping works alongside Sheikh Zayed Road between Al Safa and Al Manara Interchanges, and along Umm Al-Sheef Street, Latifa Bint Hamdan Street and Al Zommorud Street.

Works part of the first contract are expected to be complete in the first half of 2018.

National Contracting Company has secured the second contract, which includes improving the link between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al-Khail Road and Jumeirah to the west and DubaiLand to the east.

The scope of the work includes improvements to the Al Quoz entrances, several development projects, and the revamp of the existing road from the Interchange of First Al Khail Road (currently under construction) to the Interchange of Al Khail Road.

National Contracting Company is expected to conclude works in the first quarter of 2019.

Director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), HE Mattar Al Tayer, said: “The project is part of RTA’s master plan to improve the network of roads, bridges, underpasses and crossings to accommodate growing traffic volumes, and ease mobility in various parts of Dubai.

“It also complements RTA’s strategic plan for improving vertical traffic corridors such as the Airport Street, Tripoli Street, Al Yalayes Street and Al Asayel Street.”
